The template found below is used to task candidates to provide references for them. Asking for references usually occurs after the first/second step of the hiring process. You can of course add your own details to the template.

Subject Line: Reference Letters needed for the (Job tile) position at (company name)

Dear (Candidate name),

I hope this email finds you well.

Thank you for taking the time to discuss the [Job title] position with us and for [submitting the post-interview assignment by the deadline]. We had a great time getting to know you and are ready to move on to the [next/last] stage of the interview process. Could you please provide me with [two] references? Please send me their names, reporting relationships, and contact information (phone numbers or email addresses) of [two] of your former [managers/colleagues].
