Underwriters play a crucial role in reviewing insurance applications and assessing risks to assist companies in making informed decisions about offering insurance to clients.

When seeking candidates for this position, it’s important to focus on individuals with a strong financial background and expertise in the insurance industry. Inquire about their experience in areas such as analyzing credit scores, negotiating loan terms, and determining coverage amounts. Exceptional candidates should be able to provide a detailed explanation of their approach to reviewing insurance applications.

Successful underwriters are characterized by their confidence in conducting thorough research and using their judgment to recommend profitable solutions. To assess candidates effectively, consider asking situational and behavioral questions that reveal how they approach challenges and whether they possess the problem-solving skills necessary for the role.

Role-specific questions:

  • Can you walk me through the steps you typically follow before arriving at a decision regarding insurance applications?
  • In your opinion, what is the most effective method for detecting and preventing insurance fraud?
  • When conducting a background check on a potential client, what are the key factors you initially focus on, and which resources or tools do you utilize for this process?
  • Can you explain the concepts of debt and loan-to-value ratios and how you incorporate them into your underwriting decisions?
  • Do you have experience working with statistical software like SPSS, and if so, how have you utilized it in your work?
  • How do you typically present your findings and ensure that records are organized for future reference and analysis?

Operational and Situational questions:

  • What are two factors that would lead you to immediately decline an insurance application, and what is the rationale behind these decisions?
  • In a situation where you find it challenging to determine whether a risk is worth taking, what steps would you take to resolve this uncertainty?
  • If you had a gut feeling that offering insurance to a client might be too risky, even though you hadn’t found sufficient evidence to disqualify the client, would you follow that intuition, and if so, how would you justify your decision?
  • In the case of a potential client who experienced bankruptcy 10 years ago but has maintained a healthy financial status since then, would you recommend offering insurance, and why or why not?
  • When you encounter difficulties in obtaining adequate information about a client’s financial status, how do you ensure that you have conducted thorough research and due diligence?

Behavioral questions:

  • How do you maintain your motivation when dealing with repetitive tasks in your role as an underwriter?
  • Can you share a significant professional accomplishment from your career? How did you manage to achieve this milestone?
  • In your role, staying current with financial regulations and industry trends is crucial. Can you explain how you stay informed about these changes and updates?
  • Could you recount a specific instance in which you had a disagreement with your manager regarding an insurance decision? How did you go about addressing and resolving the situation?
