While they may be employed by hospitals or nursing homes, their primary workplace is often the patient’s residence. Formal training or diplomas are not typically required for this role, but possessing a CPR certificate is usually desirable. Experience can be preferred, especially when working with clients suffering from conditions like dementia, as candidates with medical knowledge may be better suited. However, for other cases, younger individuals with limited experience can excel in the role if they possess essential soft skills.

Critical qualities for PCAs include effective communication, patience, and strong ethics. Assessing these qualities can be done through situational or behavioral questions during the interview process. The best candidates will be self-motivated, compassionate, eager to learn about their clients, and honest about their comfort levels with specific types of care. It’s important to inquire about their availability and means of transportation during the final stages of the interview.
