Case Manager interview questions:

Case management within a healthcare context is a practice that spans across various disciplines. Your potential candidates will possess different specialties and diverse backgrounds, including nursing, social work, medicine, workers’ compensation, and mental and behavioral health. Additionally, the nature of the role can vary significantly between different companies. The following questions are meant to serve as a starting point, not a rigid script. You are encouraged to incorporate your own questions tailored to the specific working environment of the position.

For this role, a specific knowledge base is of lesser importance than the values that candidates demonstrate. In addition to clinical skills, qualities such as compassion, empathy, patience, perseverance, caring, and advocacy hold tremendous significance. Furthermore, the role of a case manager increasingly demands strong leadership and teamwork abilities. This is vital because case managers must effectively coordinate care among the patient’s entire healthcare team, including physicians, specialists, hospitals, families, payers, community resources, and more.

  • On a scale of one to ten, how would you rate your effectiveness in providing necessary information to a patient’s entire care team?
  • Please describe an instance where you collaborated with members of a patient’s care team to achieve a significantly successful outcome.
  • Share an experience when you had to convey complex medical information to a patient in a manner that was easy for them to understand.
  • How do you collaborate with your patients to evaluate the care they received during their hospital stay?
  • What strategies do you employ to minimize a patient’s time in the hospital?
