UI Designer interview questions:

Evaluating a designer’s qualifications might appear straightforward – assessing their work is the initial step. An in-depth review of their portfolio is an excellent starting point, and assigning them a task is equally important. Assuming these evaluations are positive, the next phase involves engaging them in discussions about design. Use these UI designer questions to assess their background and expertise.

  • Who are their design role models?
  • Where do they seek inspiration?
  • How do they stay updated on current design trends?
  • Can they provide an example of exceptional design, whether digital or physical?
  • Are there particular books, exhibitions, conferences, or design communities they admire or engage with?
  • As a designer, what do they believe is the most crucial aspect of their role?

What you’re aiming for is a passion for design that extends beyond their specific area of expertise. Are they knowledgeable and capable of critically evaluating the design choices that impact our everyday lives? A superb designer contemplates enhancements to these details.

Operational questions (Portfolio review):

  • Can you discuss your educational background, particularly any design-related studies you’ve pursued?
  • What is your current occupation, and can you tell us about the project you are currently working on?
  • Share a few of your preferred pieces from your portfolio. Detail your design process for these works, the challenges you aimed to address, and describe a particular design decision you made.
  • Discuss a project that encountered issues and didn’t go as anticipated. Can you identify the reasons behind the challenges?
  • Do you have a side project you’re interested in discussing or sharing with us?

Role-specific questions (Technical Interview Questions):

  • What is your preferred development environment, including your choice of operating system, text editor, version control, and preprocessors?
  • If you were to initiate a new project right now, what method would you select for incorporating icons into the user interface?
  • Can you explain the distinction between progressive enhancement and graceful degradation?
  • Have you worked with any CSS/Sass frameworks, either locally or in production? If so, which ones?
  • Are you acquainted with BEM or SMACSS, and what aspects do you appreciate or find less favorable about these conventions?
  • How do you go about optimizing a website’s assets and reducing page load times?
  • You come across the following code snippet in legacy code. What issues do you identify with it, and how would you enhance it?

Valuable tip: Consistently integrate an assignment into the hiring process. Here are supplementary questions to review with the candidate once they’ve completed an assignment:

  • Discuss your design process and elaborate on some of your decisions.
  • If you had additional time, what changes or improvements would you implement?
  • What alterations would you make if you were working under a tight deadline and couldn’t meet the full project scope? Which features would you prioritize?”
