Industry-specific experience can prove advantageous, particularly for senior positions. For instance, a candidate with manufacturing experience could possess insights into required products and dependable suppliers. Similarly, a retail-focused purchasing agent might possess better insights into consumer trends. Engaging in conversations with candidates can help determine whether their prior experience aligns with your company’s needs.

Vital soft skills to consider include negotiation prowess, critical thinking, and effective communication. Proficiency in areas like market research, inventory control, and procurement strategies holds significance. The subsequent questions will assist you in evaluating these aspects and selecting the most suitable candidate.

  • How has your previous experience equipped you for this role within our company?
  • What factors do you take into account when making a purchase decision for a product?

  • What considerations do you factor in when finalizing an agreement with a supplier?
  • Can you elaborate on your background in generating reports?
  • In what ways does technology aid you in your role?
  • When do you find it more beneficial to establish a contract with a supplier as opposed to making individual purchases?

Behavioral questions:

  • Can you provide an example of a time when you didn’t make the most optimal purchase decision? What insights did you gain from the experience?
  • Share a scenario when you experienced high levels of stress while on the job. How did you cope with the situation?
