Ensuring a clean driving record is a priority, and if personal vehicles are involved, valid insurance is essential. Comprehensive screening, including drug tests and background checks, is a common practice.

Skills required can differ based on the role’s nature. A delivery driver for a restaurant might need cash handling and customer service expertise. A freight truck driver might necessitate a specialized license and skills validation. A warehouse or package delivery driver could require familiarity with barcoding or forklift operation.

Given these diverse demands, customizing questions to match the job specifics is recommended. However, the following open-ended and situational questions provide a foundation. They aid in gauging candidates’ professional driving experience and aptitude.

Operational and Situational questions:

  • What attracted you to the role of a driver at our company? What aspects of the position do you find appealing?
  • Can you provide details about your professional experience as a delivery driver, including the types of vehicles you’ve operated and the range of deliveries you’ve managed?

  • Imagine you’re involved in a car accident while making a delivery. How would you handle the immediate aftermath and the subsequent steps?

  • Describe your experience with handling cash transactions and providing accurate change. Have you worked in roles that involved monetary transactions?
  • If a customer is upset due to a late delivery, how would you address their concerns and reassure them?

Transportation and Logistics Industry Questions:

  • Can you provide information about the types of long-haul equipment you have experience operating? Are you comfortable with various types of vehicles?
  • Maintaining effective communication with dispatchers and schedulers is crucial. How do you ensure clear and timely communication to stay updated on delivery instructions and changes?
  • Slip-seating can be a common practice in the industry. How do you feel about adapting to a slip-seating setup, where you might use different vehicles on different shifts?
  • Tell me about a situation where someone suspected you of falsifying your driver’s logs. How did you handle the situation and address their concerns?
