Project Manager interview questions:

Project management responsibilities encompass ensuring the timely delivery of projects within budget and defined scope. Project managers play a crucial role in orchestrating both internal resources and third-party vendors to execute projects flawlessly.

By this stage of the hiring process, you should have assessed candidates for essential hard skills, including hands-on software engineering expertise, familiarity with project management software, and a preferred methodology (such as Agile or Waterfall). During interviews, the focus shifts to evaluating their soft skills and situational judgment. Exceptional interpersonal communication skills are paramount for this role. The project manager will be the primary point of contact for your team, project-related vendors, and all stakeholders, ensuring that projects are completed within the specified time and budget. They will also be responsible for collecting and presenting project results.

On a day-to-day basis, their duties will involve negotiating project scope and resource allocation, managing communication within the team effectively, taking accountability for any issues that may arise, and resolving conflicts of opinion.

The ideal project manager will have a preferred process but should also exhibit the ability to make the right decisions in moments of crisis, which may involve deviating from standard procedures. As a result, the interview questions provided are designed to bridge the gap between methodology and practical reality. They are situational questions that can only be satisfactorily answered by candidates with relevant work experience.

Operational and Situational questions:

  • Can you discuss a previous project you worked on in under three minutes? What were the project’s deliverables, timeline, and budget?
  • Share an experience when you had to gain support from multiple stakeholders for a project. How did you persuade them?
  • Describe a situation when a project fell behind in terms of budget or time. What actions did you take to address the situation?
  • What are your preferred project management tools, and what do you appreciate about them? What are their limitations?
  • Which project management methodology do you typically use, such as Agile or another approach? Describe a scenario where you needed to deviate from the standard process. What were the outcomes?
  • Discuss a time when you had to deliver unfavorable news to a customer. How did you convey the news, and how did they react?
  • Tell me about an experience when you collaborated with a team member who wasn’t contributing adequately. How did you handle this situation?
  • Have you ever had to remove a team member? How did you explain this decision to the rest of the team?
  • Have you ever disagreed with a team member? What was the nature of the disagreement, and can you present and defend the opposing viewpoint?
