Questions for Cashier Interviews

A Cashier is a frontline position at the entry level of your establishment. A “Frontline” employee is a brand ambassador who interacts directly with your customers. It is in their hands to provide excellent customer service and create a positive impression. You will want to hire individuals who are personable for this position. The type of candidate you are looking for is one who is service oriented and who enjoys interacting with others.

How does a cashier perform his or her duties?

In addition to handling cash transactions with customers, cashiers are responsible for scanning goods,

Payment collection, issuing receipts, refunds, changes, and redemption of stamps Coupons. Previous cashier experience is not necessary for this position, especially if you’re able and willing to put in the time to train new hires. However, previous customer-facing and cash-handling experience is always helpful and desirable. You can use these interview questions to discover what is not included on the candidate’s resume. How organized are your candidates? Are you trustworthy? Are they capable of thinking on their feet? Are they capable of making the right judgment call when they are unable to resolve a situation on their own? In a team environment, how well do they work with others? Lastly, this position has repetitive responsibilities. Make sure that you evaluate the self-motivation of your candidates during these interviews.

  • Do you have any other experience dealing with customers?
  • Please describe your experience handling cash.
  • It is necessary to perform repetitive tasks in this position. How do you stay motivated?
  • Tell us about a typical day at your last job. Could you please describe your responsibilities?
  • Tell us about a time you made a suggestion that saved time, money, or improved revenue.
  • In the event that you were to be extremely late for your shift, what would you do?
  • When a co-worker fails to complete their share of the work, how would you handle the situation?
  • On a slow day at work, how would you spend your time? How would you spend your time?
  • Tell us about a time when you disagreed with your supervisor. What steps did you take to resolve the situation?
  • A customer attempts to combine two offers that cannot be combined. What would you do in this situation?
  • An item has been returned by a customer for a refund. In what manner do you operate?
  • You are unable to answer a customer’s question. Is there anything else you need to do?
  • Please describe a time when you went above and beyond to provide exceptional customer service.
