Interview questions for media planners

A media planner determines how and where to spend a company’s advertising budget (e.g., on the web, radio, and television). They utilize their knowledge of the media landscape to attract target audiences and to increase brand awareness. The ideal candidate for this position typically holds a degree in Marketing or Business Administration and has experience in advertising. Additionally, they are capable of calculating, tracking, and analyzing marketing metrics, such as return on investment and conversion rates. A successful Media Planner is able to interpret consumer behavior and plan targeted ad campaigns using analytical tools (e.g. Moat and Nielsen IMS). Consider candidates who follow trends and are willing to try new, creative approaches to reach potential customers. To assess a candidate’s ability to adapt to market challenges and identify new advertising opportunities, use the following interview questions.

Operational and Situational questions

  • How would you create a digital ad campaign on a tight budget?
  • If your manager asked for an overview of this quarter’s advertising campaigns, what
  • information would you share and how would you present it?
  • An advertising channel you use drops significantly in effectiveness. What would you do: wait and see if the drop is temporary, invest more money in paid ads or remove the channel completely from your marketing mix? Why?
  • What social networks would you suggest using to advertise our company to a younger audience?

Questions specific to a particular role

  • As a Media Planner, what are your main responsibilities? On a regular basis, which of these duties occupy the majority of your time?
  • How have you used analytics tools in the past?
  • What are the ways in which Facebook paid ads can contribute to a company’s overall advertising campaign?
  • On a daily basis, what metrics are you tracking? What are your methods for organizing data in spreadsheets and reports?
  • How can we obtain feedback from customers regarding our products and services?
  • What factors do you consider when deciding where to spend your advertising budget?
  • What is the best way to measure the effectiveness of a campaign? What are the signs that a campaign has failed? Are there any channels that you should use if you wish to limit your advertising efforts to a particular geographical area?

Questions related to behavior

  • Please describe one advertisement that you like from a company. In what ways do you think this advertisement contributes to the brand development of the company?
  • What has been your most successful project to date? In what capacity did you participate in this project and what results did you achieve?
  • In your current or previous position, how have you contributed to the growth of the company’s revenue?
  • Describe a suggestion and implementation you made (for example, using a new channel to advertise your company’s products/services).
  • In order to stay up-to-date with marketing trends, what magazines, blogs, or websites do you read?
